School projects

The History program that we use has an Activity book that has great ideas for projects for the kids. Sometimes the kids can think up their own activities! We recently read about the siege and capture of Constantinople by the Turks. The book gave instructions on how to build a canon from toilet paper rolls. (Worked great, by the way!) I put it together, while Everett and Abi built everything else.

They built a castle to represent the city. The books are the wall surrounding the city. The blue jump rope represents the water. It was only supposed to cover 3 sides, but oh well. The army men worked well as they crossed the drawbridge.

Spoons with paper wads were excellent catapults.
Their favorite part of the story was about the ships that were "sailed" on the land. The Turkish army pulled their ships up on land and pulled them around the harbor to get at the city from behind.
When we read about the Black Plague, or Black Death, they made these masks. Apparently, people would wear masks like these to keep away the bad air. Of course, they didn't help because it was the fleas from the rats spreading the disease!
When we read about Ivan the Terrible from Russia, we made these architectural eggs. These are an art in Russia. I hollowed out the eggs (yuck!!) and the kids painted them.
They colored little pictures of Russian buildings and cut them out and glued them on once the paint dried. They look really cute!
We read about China, so we made Chinese hats out of brown paper sacks.
